A fatal truck accident near Tri-Cities occurred due to bad weather conditions. A head-on truck accident killed two people and sent both drivers to the hospital. Washington State Patrol responded to the accident on SR 14 between Paterson and Interstate 82 Wednesday morning. A van was attempting to pass another car when it struck the semi head on according to Washington State Patrol. It was reported that the crash was likely due to weather conditions with freezing fog, icy roadways and low visibility.
Here are a few tips for driving in bad weather conditions.
When Driving on Snowy or Icy Roads:
Slow down enough to be able to control your vehicle, usually 10 to 15 miles per hour below the speed limit. Even all-wheel drive vehicles can have a hard time stopping on icy.
Look out for black ice. Black ice is hard to see but you can see it when your headlights reflect off the road at night. Be extra cautious of black icy and slow down on bridges, in the shadows of tall buildings and at intersections. It’s a good idea to slow down a couple hundred feet earlier than normal at stop signs and lights in bad weather.
Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. You will need more time to stop in bad weather conditions than you normally would. It is suggested to leave about 100 yards (about the length of a football field) in front of you.
Never brake when turning to avoid a spin-out. Gradually start turning and feather the brakes lightly before a curve then coast through the turn.
When Driving in Foggy Conditions:
Turn on your fog lights. Fog lights are yellow and lower to the ground to help you see through the fog better than your normal headlights.
Pump the brakes before heading into a fog bank. By pumping the brakes, you are telling the car behind you to back off. Waiting till you are in the fog before braking could get you rear ended.
Start slowing down before a hill. You won’t be able to see what’s on the other side of the hill so you want to be extra cautious.
