Common Reasons for a Hit-and-Run Injury Accident
Over 6 million car accident and traffic collisions occur in the United States every year according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of these 6 million accidents, about 3 million involve injuries. Of these injuries, over 2 million are life-changing or permanent injuries for the victim. These statistics prove how great the need is to increase traffic safety and reduce the number of auto collisions each year.
Unfortunately, often times when a driver is guilty of another crime they will flee the scene in an attempt to escape any consequences. Other common reasons for hit and run injury accidents are:
- Drunk driving
- Driver is uninsured
- Invalid driver’s license
- The driver is under the influence of illegal drugs
- The driver is already warranted for an arrest
Washington State Hit-and-Run Law: RCW 46.52.020
In the state of Washington, a driver is required to stop after being involved in a motor vehicle accident even if it was not their fault. This is so police are able to gather information from you such as your name, address, insurance policy, insurance company, and your vehicle’s license plate number. You should also exchange this information with all other drivers involved in the crash.
Failing to stop after an accident, could result in a class B or class A felony. A class B felony could lead up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
