Pasco police reported a high-speed police chase that ended in a car crash at the intersection of Highway 395 and Yelm Street. Officials say a suspect who shot a man a few days prior and has multiple warrants out for his arrest, sped away from police and slammed into another vehicle causing the car crash. Prior to reaching the intersection, police stopped but the suspect kept speeding through and crashed into another vehicle. Three people including the suspect were reportedly injured in the crash. All three were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. The intersection was closed while Washington State Patrol investigated the crash.
High-Speed Police Chase
Police pursuit is sometimes vital to capturing criminals and putting them behind bars. However, some may argue that a police chase is reckless and puts other citizens in danger. Data from a USA TODAY analysis show reported that more than 5,000 bystanders and passengers have been killed in a police chase since 1979. That does not include the tens of thousands more who were injured by simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
However, it is important to keep in mind that police officers are trained to pursue suspects while driving. They also have equipment and techniques given to them to gain a greater edge over fleeing criminals. A pursuit requires the officer to be focused 100 percent on the road and traffic ahead in hopes of avoiding a car crash. Other drivers and innocent bystanders are required to also be paying attention. Whenever a siren is heard or police lights are seen, drivers are required to pull over as soon as possible to stay out of the way.
