As roads and highways are used in Washington State, they often deteriorate and are damaged. These roads require maintenance and/or reconstruction. This is necessary to ensure safe travel for the public who use the roadways. Maintenance and reconstruction often require specialized heavy-duty equipment. These highway improvement vehicles may be permitted to operate without a special gross weight permit. These vehicles are exempted if they are operating within the boundaries of the project limits. The city, county, or state entity responsible for the maintenance of the roadway is responsible to ensure that the improvement vehicles are authorized under the law to operate without a permit in the project boundary. Additionally, they must obtain any permits necessary for use outside the permitted boundary.
