A semi truck accident killed four and injured three others according to Washington State Patrol. The crash happened on U.S. Highway 97 when an SUV sped through a stop sign and rammed into a semi truck heading south on the highway. Six persons were traveling in the SUV at the time of the collision. Four in the SUV succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the accident. The two others in the SUV were taken to the hospital for evaluation of injuries. The driver of the semi truck driver suffered only minor injuries.
Dangers of Running Stop Signs
Running stop signs is a dangerous habit for some. Washington State Law requires all drivers to stop completely behind the crosswalk when present when approaching a stop sign. When a driver fails to stop completely, a serious or fatal collision may occur. Failing to obey stop sign laws is likely to create a t-bone collision. A t-bone collision occurs when one vehicle pulls in front of an oncoming vehicle and is struck from the side. These types of accidents are typically extremely dangerous and lead to serious injuries or death because the oncoming vehicle is often traveling at or above the speed limit when it strikes the car in its path. In addition, there is usually almost no protection as the impact will usually hit the car door. Side airbags reduce the risk of death, but cannot absorb the massive force generated in a broadside collision.
Common Injuries from Running a Stop Sign or in a T-Bone Collision
Typical injuries seen in a t-bone collision can be catastrophic. The force exerted causes injuries in both vehicles to be serious. Obviously, the vehicle pulling into traffic is must absorb the majority of force in a relatively unprotected area of the car. The following are some common injuries associated with running a stop sign or in a t-bone collision.
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Fractured/broken bones
- Neck and back injuries
- Spinal cord damage
- Lacerations and contusions often caused by air bags or contact with the vehicle
Injuries in a t-bone accident are more severe if one of the vehicles is significantly larger or heavier such as a semi truck.
